George Street - Friday evening in August

Here is my latest Bath painting that I will enter just in time for the Bath Prize. This is George Street on a summer evening (click on the image to see a bigger picture)

George Street - Friday evening in August   12"x20"  oil on board

Here is a close up of a section of the painting, probably my favourite part, as I love the contrast of the light on the distant buildings with the darker buildings in the foreground:

I made the painting in my studio based on a series of pictures I took a few weeks ago as I was going for a drink on friday night. I was on my way to the pub when I got struck by this beautiful scene and thought it would be a great painting subject. I managed to take a few pictures just seconds before the sun disappeared for good behind the clouds:

Here are a couple of close up of the painting:

I will post soon my last painting for the Bath Prize and more details about the show. Looking forward to it already!

  4. Thanks all for the kind comment. The chance to win anything is very slim so I'm not banking on that and would happy just to have my work displayed there...

  5. If that one does not win something I will eat my hat! Great stuff Valerie and good to know that you are not allowing the house sale business to deflect you from your true path!

    1. Thanks Tim. I hope you have strong stomach, because the only prize this painting could win - because it's not a selected location or a plein air work - is the actual 5K Bath Prize! I'm not being pessimistic, but that's aiming pretty high! :-)

  6. Hi Valerie.
This is one brilliant painting. Is it completely plein air? if so it is amazing. First class painting here Valerie. I give you full marks for this one. All the best.
    Vic.
P.S. I go along with Tim, I`ll eat my hat as well.

    1. Thanks Vic! I wish I could say I painted this plein air but I didn't. I took a photograph of that scene as I was on my way to go for a drink and this sun reflection on the buildings lasted just for a few minutes - would be very difficult to catch on a plein air work, specially since the painting is a fairly big canvas, well big for me at least (12"x20")

  7. Valerie, this is a winner!! Love it. I'll be dining at the same restaurant as Tim and have my own hat with a side order of chips and salad if this doesn't bag a prize :)

    1. Thanks David, your comment made me laugh. As I replied to Tim, I don't want to be pessimistic but the only prize this painting could win - because it's not a selected location or a plein air work - is the actual 5K Bath Prize! Get your hat ready! If I do win the prize though, I'll invite you both to the most beautiful restaurant in Venice so you can eat something much tastier than your hat!
